Early life

Soori was born in a slum in Bangalore, to a very poor family. Soori's father was a vegetable vendor, and when he passed away suddenly Soori had to find himself an occupation to survive. He took up painting numbers on number plates, making signs and banners for a living. Soori was very interested in learning, and read a lot of books mainly the late Lankesh's writing. The acting bug bit him then, and went to the Abbayya Naidu Kalamandir and went through a five year course. During this time, he came to know people from films and television like B Suresh and Yograj Bhat. He also has a theater background, he used to work as art director.

Career

Soori began his film career as an assistant to B Suresh for a television serial. He also worked as the cinematographer Ashok Kashyap's assistant for a couple of films. His real interest lay in writing however, and Yograj Bhat came to his assistance by asking him to write the dialogues for his directorial debut Mani in 2003. The film was critically acclaimed, but was not a box office success. Yograj Bhat retained Soori as dialogue writer for his next film with Sudeep. This film too was not accepted by the public. But the dialogues, brilliantly rendered by Sudeep on screen, made a mark on the public. Both Yograj Bhat and Soori were forced to take a break after the failure of Ranga SSLC. Yograj Bhat came up with Mungaaru Male and Soori, not to be left behind, made his underworld opus Duniya. Made with a shoestring budget, Duniya went on to be one of the biggest successes in the Kannada film industry in 2007. Duniya told the story of a not-so-bright man ruthlessly used by the Bangalore underworld. Soori used elements of his own past life in the film, and was acclaimed for having made a realistic film. The film also showcased the talent of actors Vijay, Rashmi and Rangayana Raghu. The film went on to win the state award for second best film for the year 2006-2007.

Soori began work on his second directorial venture, Inti Ninna Preetiya. The plot for this movie is supposed to have originated when friend Yograj Bhat gave Soori a poem written by Naanyaaru. (The song is present in the album). Soori once again chose to make a movie on the lower echelons of society, this was a story of a painter whose love leaves him to be married to another. The man then becomes depressed and hits the bottle until one day he reforms. Soori produced the film himself, along with Yograj Bhat. The film generated vast anticipation, but when it released it got panned for its content almost universally. The movie was a failure commercially as well. Soori teamed up with Duniya star Vijay once again for the action flick Junglee, which Soori says will be on the lines of Duniya. The film is expected to release in February, 2009. There are also rumours that Soori will team up with Puneet or Shiv Rajkumar for his next venture.

Themes

Soori, in his three films so far has used the theme of death. In Duniya, Protagonist Shivu's mother dies in the beginning of the film and sets the tone of the film. The film ends with the death of the lead pair as well. In Inti Ninna Preetiya, there are characters who deal with death on a day to day basis - grave diggers etc. The protagonist Rajeev hits the bottle the second time with his wife's death. So too in Junglee, Soori is unwilling to let go of his pet theme, and has visited morgues and hospitals to observe dying people.

Recurring Actors

Rangayana Raghu has appeared in all three of Soori's films, and in important roles. Soori has also repeated actor Vijay twice.
