Early life

Ramya was born Divya Spandana on November 29, 1981. She studied at St Hilda's convent in Ooty, and in St Joseph's College in Bangalore.

Career

Ramya was asked to audition for the role of leading lady in Puneet Rajkumar's debut film Appu. She did so, but was passed over for Rakshita who eventually got the part. She attempted the auditions again for Puneet's second film Abhi, for which she was selected. The film was directed by Dinesh Baboo and offered her a meaty role. It was also a commercial win, and firmly established Ramya as a heroine to watch for. She made Excuse Me, a heroine oriented film directed by ace director Prem the same year. This film too earned her good reviews. The film also caused the media to brand Ramya as a tantrum thrower, due to a spat on location with director Prem. Further cementing this image was the film Ranga SSLC in 2004. Ramya and hero Sudeep fought and refused to talk to each other for the better part of filming. Ranga did not do well in the box office, but Ramya's next release Kanti was a success. A love story set against the backdrop of borders and language issues, the film was a major success. It earned a state award for co-star Murali, and established Ramya as a serious actress. She also did a crash course in acting in Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting school to improve her performance.

Ramya continued her good run at the box office in 2005 with four films, all successes at the box office. She made Aadi with Auditya, Aakash with Puneet Rajkumar, Gowramma with Upendra and finally Amrutadhaare with Dhyan. Aakash and Amrutadhaare, films where Ramya had important roles, did extremely well at the box office. She also made news for criticizing fellow actress Rakshita for the type of roles she chose to do which set off a public media war between the two actresses. In 2006, Ramya chose to do a remake of the yesteryears hit film Julie. Ramya ditched her girl-next-door image for the film, but the film failed to make any impression on the audience. Her other films Sevanti Sevanti and Datta were also average. But she bounced back with Jote Joteyali opposite Prem Kumar, the film went on to be one of the big hits of 2006. On a personal front, Ramya showed maturity and patched up with Rakshita. The two actresses appeared together in Kavita Lankesh's ambitious venture Tananam Tananam. The audience were not impressed, but the film fetched her a Filmfare Award.

After 2007's first hit Arasu, her third with Puneet, Ramya concentrated on Tamil films. She did not completely stop working in Kannada however, and in 2007 turned a bravura performance in TN Seetaram's commercially panned Meera Madhava Raghava as Meera. Her 2008 releases were a mixed bag, Mussanje Maatu in which she patched up and paired with Sudeep was a sleeper hit. Her much expected Bombaat with Ganesh and producer-actor Aditya Babu's Antoo Intoo Preeti Bantu were critically and commercially panned. Ramya's next releases are the much delayed superhero film Bhimoos Bang Bang Kids with Upendra, Jotegaara with Prem and Ullasa with newcomer Vijay.
