Career

As a Writer

Preetam Gubbi made his debut with the film Mungaaru Male. He wrote the script and co-wrote the screenplay with the director Yograj Bhat. The film had a simple story, that of the love and sacrifice of a young, carefree man. The movie went on to create box office history in the industry. Preetam followed it up with two more simple tales - Geleya, directed by the long-time choreographer Harsha and the Ganesh starrer Aramane. While both did not attain the success of his first film, Preetam won a lot of critical acclaim for his scripts. His films are usually characterized by having a simple, yet relatable story line.

He has also written the story for his directorial debut, Haage Summane.

As a Director

Preetam was supposed to have directed the sequel to the hit Mungaaru Male. The film was supposed to have Ganesh and Ramya in the cast, however both (?) leads rejected the script that resulted in the shelving of the project. Preetam then picked up the script of Haage Summane for his debut, he cast relative newcomers as his lead pair - Kiran Srinivas, who had acted in one previous film, SMS 6260 alongside Digant and Suhaasi Goradia, who was previously seen in a couple of Hindi soaps and had acted in a Telugu film Vaade Kavali. The technical team - the cinematographer S Krishna, the editor Deepu S Kumar, music director Mano Murthy, lyricist Jayant Kaikini were all part of the original Mungaru Male team. He has promised viewers that they would not see a repeat of Mungaaru Male, even though the name of the protagonist in this film is also Preetam and the title itself is taken from the popular song Anisutide Yaako Indu. The film released on Dec 26, 2008. It opened to a largely negative critical response, that Preetam had served Mungaaru Male again. Undaunted, Preetam is all set for his second film - also starring Kiran.

Influences

Preetam admires the popular directors of Bollywood romances, Karan Johar, Yash and Aditya Chopra.
