Plot
Moggina Manasu follows the life of 4 friends in pre university college. The film is told through Chanchala (Radhika). Chanchala joins the prestigious Queen's Girl's College as it has a reputation for turning out most number of rank students. Other girls have the same idea, notably Renuka Devi (Shubha Poonja), a girl from North Karnataka with an ambition to be a doctor.
The girls become fast friends, two seniors (Manasi and Didi) who ragged them initially join their group. Studies become secondary when the girls get attached to boyfriends. Renuka falls for the funny Akash and Chanchala first develops a crush on her English lecturer (Rajesh). She grows out of it soon enough, and enters a relationship with Sunil. Things turn sour when Sunil turns out to be too controlling, and Chanchala breaks the relationship.
Renuka neglects her studies to be with Akash. Chanchala then meets the musician Rahul (Yash) who falls in love with her. Chanchala reciprocates. Renuka who's now pregnant with Akash's child asks him to marry her. He refuses. In a dilemma, Renuka commits suicide. This affects Chanchala deeply, she breaks off all ties to Rahul. The movie shifts to a few years later, Chanchala is now an IT professional. She travels back to Queen's for a re-union. Rahul, who's now a rock star performs at the re-union, and proposes to Chanchala as he hasn't forgotten her. She accepts.
Opening & Audience Response
Moggina Manasu was supposed to release in the last week of April 2008. It had trouble with the censor board - it was initially awarded an 'A' certificate for the content. The producer E Krishnappa refused to let it slide, he appealed the rating in the censor board tribunal at Delhi. The rating was then reduced to a U/A and the film finally opened on 18 Jul, 2008. It did good business in the first few weeks, considering the lack of stars in the cast, helped a little by Mano Murthy's melodious music and of course the controversy that besieged it. The business slowed down when Bangalore was hit by a series of minor blasts, but later picked up by word of mouth, good critical reviews and the lack of other good films to complete 100 days at the main theater Sagar.
Critical Response
Moggina Manasu had a positive response from the critical circle. Critics called it refreshing, the treatment and narration excellent. The girls Radhika Pandit and Shubha Poonja were appreciated highly for their acting, and Shashank drew applause for his direction.
Trivia
- Radhika Pandit was supposed to make her debut with 18th Cross. The film got delayed.
- The music director Mano Murthy drew flak for making one of the songs Geleya Beku sound exactly similar to Taal Se Taal Mila from the movie Taal. The director was also criticized, as the song was picturized the same way as the Taal song.
- Shashank had previously directed a film called Sixer starring Prajwal Devraj.
- SV Rajendra Singh Babu initially accused Shashank to have stolen the story of his shelved movie Teen Teen. But the issue came to nothing as Shashank's story was proven to be quite unlike Teen Teen. (?)
