Early life
Mano Murthy was musically inclined from a young age. His parents took him to the Karnataka Music Festival every year. He has been trained formally in western classical music and was a student of the maestro Zakir Hussain. When he was studying at UVCE, Bangalore to be an electrical engineer, he was the lead member and percussionist of a pop group called Sonics which performed in Bombay, Goa and Bangalore. He moved to California for post graduation, and since 1976 was into computer networking. In the early 90's he switched back to his original passion, music.
Career
Mano Murthy turned film composer for the first time with the 1996 film America America. The film went on to be a hit, both critically and commercially. The music was well appreciated, songs like Nooru Janmaku and Yaava Mohana Murali were hits. After this, Mano took a lengthy break and returned in 2001 with the next Nagathihalli film Nanna Preetiya Hudugi. This too was appreciated musically, Car Car was a major hit with the younger audience.
Mano took to composing music more often with films like Kavita Lankesh's national award winning film Preeti Prema Pranaya, the Ramesh starrer Joke Falls and Nagathihalli's next Amruthadhaare. His music for all these movies were well appreciated, the movies were also commercially successful. He also turned producer for one film - Preeti Prema Pranaya, as he maintains, unintentionally.
He maintained relative anonymity despite the success of his films, up until he composed for the 2006 smash hit Mungaaru Male. The film was a blockbuster commercially, and the music of the film played a very big part in the success of the film. Mano was then residing in California, and most of the music was composed in the US and approved of by the director Yograj Bhat via emails and phone calls. This film was responsible for the revival of Kannada film music to a large extent and also caused the Mano-Jayant-Sonu (the music composer Mano Murthy, the lyricist Jayant Kaikini, the singer Sonu Nigam) mania in the days to follow. Mano also received several awards for the music, including the Karnataka State Award for Best Music Director.
Mano became a full fledged Kannada music composer after Mungaaru Male. In 2007, no less than 6 movies with music by Mano hit the Kannada screens, out of which Cheluvina Chittara, Milana, Mathad Mathadu Mallige and Geleya were major hits musically. The Mano magic continued in 2008, Moggina Manasu was a musical hit. His music in Bombaat and Maadesha has been appreciated even though the movies were commercial failures. Mano resolved to make less movies and as a result dropped out of a plum project, the Puneet Rajkumar starrer Vamshi. At the tail end of 2008, Mano has Haage Summane, Preetam Gubbi's directorial debut. The music is already a hit.
In 2009, Mano's music will be heard in Vijayalakshmi Singh's next Male Barali Manjoo Irali, the Prem-Andrita Ray starrer Januma Janumadallu and in Nagathihalli's next Olave Jeevana Lekkachara. He has also composed the music for the now-shelved Yograj Bhat film Lagori.
