Mahesh Babu is a Kannada director. He started off assisting various directors. His directorial debut was with the film Akash starring Puneet Rajkumar and Ramya which was a blockbuster.

Early Life

Mahesh hails from Kollegal and has a degree from the JSS College in Mysore.

Career

Mahesh Babu started his film career assisting various directors. He was noticed by actor Shiv Rajkumar when assisting director Puri Jagannath for the film Yuvaraja. Shiv Rajkumar was impressed by his dedication, and therefore urged him to become an independant director. Mahesh went on to direct Shiv Rajkumar's brother Puneet for a home banner production, Akash in 2005. Akash was a mature, simple love story expertly handled by the debutant director. The film scored well with both critics and audiences. Mahesh was repeated for another Rajkumar home banner film, again starring Puneet and Ramya. Arasu was again a love story, and it too went on to become a box office hit.

Mahesh then did Meravanige with young actor Prajwal Devraj. Lucky charm Ramya made a guest appearance in this film. Meravanige did not do as well as expected, even though the film was appreciated by critics and audiences. Mahesh noted later that he should have released Meravanige before Prajwal's failed effort Gange Baare Tunge Baare. His next film with Shiv Rajkumar, Paramesha Paanwala released late in 2008 was a disaster at the box office. The film, written by Mahesh Babu regular Janardhan Maharshi, was a lame rehash of Maharshi's earlier films Bindaas and Bombaat and the audience refused to be charmed a third time. Mahesh is now directing his first film with Darshan. Abhay is expected to release in mid 2009.

Mahesh Babu has repeated actress Ramya twice in lead roles, and in his third film she put in a guest appearance. All of Mahesh's films have been scripted by Telugu writer Janardhan Maharshi.
