Early life
Gurukiran was born to defense personnel father K Jayaram Shetty and an educationalist mother Ratnakanti Shetty in Mangalore. His musical journey started when he was forced to sing in music competition and won the 4th place. After completion of his graduation in Commerce from the Mangalore University, he took to performing in orchestras in Mangalore in the role of a singer and that of a keyboard performer.
Career
Non music
Gurukiran initially came to the Kannada film industry wanting to be an actor. He performed several little roles, most notably in the Sunil Kumar Desai film Nishkarsha. When an opportunity arose to be a music director, he rose to the challenge and became a full fledged music composer. Gurukiran continues to appear on screen as himself - in the 2008 film Aramane, Gurukiran sang the final song on screen. Apart from this, he is also a host in a reality contest Confident Singer.
As a Composer
Gurukiran started off as a composer by making a private album in 1989. The album didn't do well. He then made music for TV serials being aired on Doordarshan. It was this that helped him get the first film offer from Upendra for his ambitious film A. Gurukiran took this as a challenge and composed six songs for the film. The film's music was a craze and the film itself went on to be a massive hit. With this Gurukiran's music career took off. He followed up with the next directorial venture of Upendra, Upendra and Chitra. Both the films were commercial successes. Songs like MTV Subbulaxmige from Upendra and Jinke Mari from Chitra were chartbusters.
In 2002, Gurukiran composed music for Puneet Rajkumar's debut film Appu. The film's music was a hit - Taliban Alla Alla was a mass favorite. He also composed for Puneet's second film Abhi a year later. In 2004, Gurukiran directed the music for the Dr Vishnuvardhan-Soundarya starrer Aaptamitra. The film was a remake of the Malayalam film Mani Chitra Tazhu, Gurukiran however composed fresh songs for the film which went on to break all box office records. The music of the film was also highly appreciated.
A year later, Gurukiran was again involved with a block-buster, this time the Prem directed underworld film Jogi and once again the music helped the film's cause. He has since then composed for more hit films, notably Ramesh Arvind's directorial debut Rama Shama Bhama, Shiv Rajkumar's ambitious historical Gandugali Kumararama, Ganesh starrer Aramane. In 2009, Gurukiran's music will be heard in movies like Ramu's Gulaama, Thaakath with Duniya Vijay among others.
As a singer & lyricist
Gurukiran began singing in his first film as composer A. Since then he has sung for his own compositions, as well as for noted music composers like Mano Murthy, RP Patnaik etc. He has also composed lyrics for some films like Tuntaata and News.
